CONNOR FLOORS
THE OLD MAN
Young Connor Jones
decided that it was time he fulfilled a long term promise to his dad and
taught him how to fish properly. Connor who is reasonably new to the
piscatorial art showed his dad Austin the way you should fish if you
intend making a success of it. Any old body can catch a Carp says Connor
but it takes a master to catch a good Bream.

Ryans Perch

Young Ryan
accompanied his dad Steve to the Banbury lane section of the canal where
young Ryan proceeded to catch a daddy ruff and a good quantity of perch
Ryan is pictured above with one of his fish.
Leah's day
Young Leah
accompanied dad Rex to the Meadow Lakes fishery at Rothersthorpe during
one of the recent unsettled periods, and among many mutterings of we
should have brought the shelter, I told you we should have .... Leah
went on to prove that dad is not the only angler in the family. Though
dad can catch the big fish it takes a real expert to catch these says
top rod Leah as she displays her perch.

William's Catch

Young William
pictured above, with both his personal best and the Junior fish ofthe
year so far. Well done William all you need to do now is teach dad how
to catch one like it. William is pictured above with his 27 lb Mirror.
THE THINGS
THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF
The day was over
cast and breezy not a day you would assume for glory. The anglers on the
water had, had fish but having spent a few hours in the wind had pretty
well called it a day. Then at just after four Ryan arrived with dad
Steve. No sooner had Ryan left (his mums) car and before dad had even
finished unpacking he'd grabbed his new whip and with maggots in hand
and dad in tow he set off to the water. Then the sun came out. Never has
there been a brighter spot on the lake than when young Ryan perched on
his box landed his first fish.

The elation in that young lads face
was enough to brighten the coldest of days as he landed his first fish.
Then his second and so it went on. He must have landed twenty before I
left.

All was right in the world for Ryan
and then he went and did it. He caught the fish of the day.
Well done Ryan, we'll make an angler of dad yet.

The club today put on a junior
angling event In conjunction with the coordinator of the Northants Canal
Partnerships Joanna Neill. The event was a roaring success with all of
the seven kiddies ranging from five to eleven years catching plenty of
roach perch gudgeon and a pope through out the two and a half hour
event. The parents in attendance expressed a definite interest in
another event as did the Kiddies a couple of whom were doing so well
that they were reluctant to pack up. As a result of the interest shown
we hope to get something else up and running soon.
A great day was had by volunteers and kids alike.

Dad Steve caught the above fish a 25lb 5oz common
off the surface at Meadow Lakes
As can be seen by the look on three year old Ryans face he is extremely
pleased for dad but could no doubt catch a better one himself.

Young Samuel Attfield 7 enjoyed a
day out at Turvey with his dad John last week, and thought he'd show the
old fellah a thing or two about fishing the River Great Ouse. Having
listened to all the advice dad John offered, young Samuel promptly
showed dad how it's done. Whilst dad had a bash at the bigger fish
Samuel landed a quality Roach of one pound eight ounces. Well done Sam a
specimen fish by anyone standards.

Friends Rhiann and Jamie spent the
evening at Meadow Lakes and had a good time catching some of the newly
stocked small carp. A bonus for both youngsters neither of whom had ever
caught carp before.

Sisters Rhiann and Hannah Easey enjoyed
an outing to the Banbury Lane section of the Grand Union Canal on the
afternoon of the 9th of August and for two young ladies who had'nt
really done much fishing before they had a great time catching small
roach bream hybrids perch to about half a pound and a few gudgeon and
small roach. Well done girls.

One for the Youngsters
From Pete Davis.
Rather than using all
that valuable pocket money by buying expensive floats which you may
break or lose by getting caught up, why not try the following and save
yourself a lot of money. After all you can get a lot of floats out of a
pack of normal drinking straws.

To make this drinking
straw float, buy a packet of drinking straws from the supermarket and
cut them down to about 6" for short floats or leave them longer if you
prefer.
Get a piece of fine
garden cane or a piece of round balsa and push it into one end of the
straw with a bit of waterproof glue. Now do the same to the other end
and paint the tip with some float paint. Push a float over the bottom of
the float so that you can fix it to your line or use a large float
adapter if you have one. The floats may not last a long time and the
paint may come off the tip but you can always afford to make a few at a
time and with straws being cheap and easy to make it does not really
matter if you lose one or two.

It's been a long time in the making but
we are finally getting something done for the younger angler.
There have been several things done by the Club this year which were
aimed at the youngsters in the local community which were to include
fish ins which were run in conjunction with British Waterways and the
Northampton canal partnership where Club members helped to show some of
the local children something about fishing and introduce them to the
sport. As the report below outlines.
The Canal Partnership, British
Waterways and Northampton Nene Anglers got together on Saturday
the 5th of May to introduce youngsters to angling and the fish of the
canal system. There were twelve youngsters of varying ages all of whom
had a good day and caught fish of different species the event took
place between one and four in the afternoon and the result is that all
parties are keen to get another day arranged. For further details
contact Jacqui Palmer on 01604 858709.

As well as this there was one particular youngster
who took on the adults at their own game and though he was only ten
years old Josh Palmer certainly did well in a match of 17 adults Josh
went on to record a weight that was better than some of the some of the
adults. See below.
27th July 2003
The
latest Nene Angling open match was today fished at the Ransome Road
Lake.
The conditions were reasonable with some cloud cover and the seventeen
anglers caught with varying degrees of success with the top weights
being made up of both Tench and good Bream though there were plenty of
bits to be had as well. On top of the catches made by the senior anglers
we must take our hats off to ten year old Josh Palmer who fished a
very good match to beat some of the adults with a very respectable 1lb
12ozs made up of a skimmer bream and perch, this is the type of thing we
need, more junior interest in the match scene well done Josh keep up the
good work.

Then we have our pleasure anglers
take young Sam Chapman who went down to Meadow Lakes for a mornings
fishing and ended up with 19 fish one of which was a Tench of 4lbs 8ozs.
This was his first visit to the lake and he did very well. Sam who is
ten enjoyed his day, and is looking forward to his next visit.
Incidentally the Tench was Sam's personal best.

27th October 2003
Jake and Callum Horwood enjoyed a days
fishing at Banbury Lane on the Grand Union Canal in Northampton today.
Though it was very hard to get a bite initially the fish did begin to
feed after the first hour and the boys went on to catch 21 fish between
them. Jake caught the biggest fish of the day a Pope (daddy ruff) with
the youngest of the brothers Callum showing Jake how its done.
