12th OCTOBER 2008 The first leg of the Northampton Nene Winter League went ahead on the Grand Union Canal this week despite the delay in starting which arose from problems with the pegging out. In warm Autumnal conditions with a warm south westerly breeze the match fished reasonably well with fish being caught through out the match length. At the weigh in the weights were pretty consistent with plenty of the seventy four anglers recording weights in the region of two and a half pounds. There were some outstanding catches how ever with Alan Webster in B section catching a perch of two pounds plus and Alan Robinson who took second over all with his silver fish catch. The angling for Spro team leader was pretty constant from the off with small fish all the way. The second round of the match will be on November 9th between Bugbrooke and Birds Haulage.RESULTS 1ST ADI STOKES WELLINGBOROUGH 6-2-0 2ND ALAN ROBINSON SPRO 5-15-0 3RD TONY WARD RUGBY 5-12-0 4TH STEVE GIBSON BLACKHORSE 5-5-0 5TH R. Division 3 National – Staffs & Worcs Canal - Saturday 16th AugustGreen and Buckley shine in a disappointing National for NNAC
The picturesque Staffs & Worcs canal provided the venue for this years Div 3 National. The canal was on average about 12m wide with plenty of far bank features to fish to. However, the constant boat traffic did make fishing difficult and for most the last couple of hours were barren. Only Gerald Green and John Buckley managed to catch a decent enough weight to earn excellent section points for the team. Both anglers finished 6th in their respective sections, achieving 33 points out of a possible 38. The team finished a disappointing 24th position out of the 38 teams that entered. Gerald was drawn in E section and caught 1.8kg of mainly roach with a few gudgeon and perch for good measure. The winner of E section and match runner up caught 7.5kg and was some distance ahead of the others in the section (he did have the end peg though!) John was in B section and found himself in a reasonable area where four of the top six anglers in his section came from. John caught 1.4kg of fish and had the perfect start catching 1.5lb bream first put in. Top weight in this section was 3.4kg. The rest of the team didn’t fair that well really with anglers such as Bob Eales (Sect A) and Les Ramsden (Sect H) struggling for a for a few hundred grams but having the indignation of sitting next to the section winner! Ron Collins was in the much fancied D section where the eventual match winner came from with 8.6kg, but couldn’t get any of those bonus fish that were there. The winning angler landed a 15lb carp early on backed up with a decent tench and bream. The average weight for this section was 1.8kg. Other team members Paul Ramsden, Brian Beard and Paul Minney managed around 800g each. Andy Law found himself being double boated twice, struggled to catch a 1lb plus of fish and to cap it all at the end of the match went back to find that his car along with others had been impounded in a farmers field! Mick Goodridge was just a few pegs away from being in with a chance of the prizes and better points as the top six anglers in his section all drew the last six pegs! For the full listing of results go to www.nfaresults.co.uk/2008/div3_sections.php Next year it’s the New Junction Canal - www.doncaster-and-district-angling-association.co.uk/new-junction-canal.htm Have a peek, it looks lovely!!!!
NNAC –
Club Match
The club were not blessed with the best of weather for their second visit of the season to Waterloo Farm. A Strong blustery wind coupled with intermittent heavy downpours did little to help the 13 anglers present. Fish and indeed bites were hard to come by for most in the first couple of hours and for those facing into the wind presentation on the pole was very difficult, therefore those anglers turned to the feeder as their main line of attack. Baz Eaton began to catch steadily fishing the cage feeder with pellet and occasionally alternating with the pole, catching small carp in the 1lb-2lb bracket. On the next peg Bob Eales also then began to start catching a similar stamp of fish, initially on the feeder but then in the last couple of hours mainly on the pole, feeding sweet corn and using sweet corn on the hook. As the match progressed it became a two way battle between these two for first and second place. Those with the wind behind were mainly fishing the pole and waggler and were catching reasonably regularly but a smaller stamp of fish. Throughout the match though Dave Gibbins and Paul Ramsden were catching a few more of the 1lb-2lb carp than their club mates on the same bank could manage and were now competing for third place. At the final whistle a good last hour had seen Bob Eales take first place with 39lb 15oz, a very creditable perfor mance taking the conditions into account. Baz Eaton was second with 27lb 10oz and Dave Gibbins third with 19lb 12oz.. John Buckley, with the wind and rain in his face, had also done well and just pipped Paul Ramsden by a few ounces for fourth spot, both anglers catching 16lb plus.
The Northampton Nene Summer League second leg was
fished between New Bridge and Furnace Lane at Nether Heyford. The
match over alll was a hard slog for most of the forty nine guys
involved with the canal not fishing anything like its usual standard.
That is with the exception of D section where for some reason the
fish seemed to be on the feed. indeed the first five results all came
from the one section.

SUNDAY 22ND JUNE The first round of the NNAC Summer
League took place on the Grand Union canal between Dodford and Weedon.
The weather was once more to play a dominant role in the match with the
high winds causing problems for a lot of the fifty anglers taking part.
All in all plenty of fish were caught though the weights were reasonable
low considering the way the water can and does fish. The Nelson Ac match group from Stockton were at the Weston Mill this week for their first river match of the season. In extremely windy conditions the lads struggled and had to relocate some of the anglers mid match as their pegs were unfishable. The honours were taken by top rod Micheal bedding on the day with a cracking catch of Bream. He was closely followed by second man Matt bousefeild who too a bag of very nice tench from the opposite side of the river. RESULTS 1ST MICHEAL BEDDING 23-14-0

The lads of Nelson AC based in Stockton travelled to Bugbrooke
today to fish the Lovers Lane section of the Grand Union Canal. In warm breezy
conditions the lads found that getting past hundreds of gudgeon was the first
issue of the match. Having achieved this they were eventually able to target the
better fish and found themselves putting weights together made up of Perch and
Bream though Alan Scriven was the only one to manage to find the quality roach.
Team leader Dan Winfield said he'd never caught so may gudgeon in a match. There
were the usual amount of boats on the water for the time of year and largely
they had no ill effect on the fishing. Sunday 15th April
The members of the Abington Park AC today fished an extremely
difficult match on the Grafton Regis section of the Grand Union. With the
arrival of a warm sunny day the boat traffic was some what heavier than it has
been of late and as a result it was difficult to get the fish concentrated, On
top of this some of the anglers found that if they fished across the water they
only had about four inches in which to fish, the water was a good foot to
eighteen inches below level.
Sunday 8th April The worthy lads from Team Gilders today endured what turned into a bit of a gruelling match which was booked on the Long Pound at Stoke Bruerne. In fine sunny weather with a cool wind and cooler than usual water the fishing was tough to say the very least. On top of that the holiday traffic was out on the Canal in force. The pound fished absolutely terribly considering it's normal consistency but this was possibly due to the constant lock action. The lads were glad to get to the pub after this one.
1ST NICK WILSON 2LBS 7OZ'S Sunday 18th March 2007
Abington Park AC were today pegged out in the Long pound at
Stoke Bruerne. The ten anglers endured everything from high winds to a hail
storm through the course of the match, and perhaps not surprisingly the fishing
was hard. There were also problems with the water levels as one of the lower
pounds had emptied and subsequently the water was running for a good while.
Despite the conditions there were some reasonable
weights put together.
RESULTS
The only other canal match today was held below the trees at
Bugbrooke though the sudden return of winter caused a few issues the lads fared
reasonably well. The water they had elected to fish was the most sheltered spot
along the entire length. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunday 11th March 2007
The final leg of the Northampton Nene Winter League was today
fished on what can only be described as a very difficult water. The match was
pegged from the lock pounds just below Stoke Bruerne in an almost continual line
through to just below Bozenham Mill on the GUC. There were some sixty four
anglers on this match alone with the over all league being fished between
October 2006 and today over six legs seeing a total of 455 anglers taking
part. It was as a roaring success with special praise being due to Paul Minney
and Chris Howard the guys without whom the series could'nt have gone
ahead. Getting down to peg the match from as early as 4am, they then endured the
conditions which ranged from fine in the earlier months to bitterly cold during
the winter and each evening after fishing the match stayed on to work out both
the points and the winnings. The club would also like to extend a special thank
you to Derek and his team at The White Hart in Flore. Who were there to open the
pub and feed the lads in the morning and have their doors open to welcome
the lads back after the match. Overall the League was a cracking event and the

1ST IVAN CLARKE 7LBS 6OZS Sunday 11th February 2007 Finedon Angling Club today fished the Furnace Lane section of the Grand Union at Nether Heyford and found the match hard work mostly due to the water being extremely cold as a result of the recent snow thaw getting into the canal and a blustery cold westerly wind. None of the anglers were able to contact fish near to the normally productive moored boats but found most of their fish in the deeper water of the boating channel. The match honours must surely go to third place man Matthew Roberts who managed to battle the thirteen other anglers to take third position at seven years of age. RESULTS
1ST GEOFF CADE 5LBS (ROACH AND GUDGEON) Northampton Nene held a match just along the water at Heyford short walk and had much the same problems with the weather though the wind was substantially stronger. Three of the anglers also had to endure match long problems with a pike of good size that continued to make the angling difficult as it snatched at anything they caught. The whole field caught fish with the usually good water only coming together for one man Who left the rest of the field trailing in his wake.
1ST JOHN BUCKLEY 10LBS (CASTER CAUGHT PERCH) Sunday 4th February 2007 The penulitmate leg of the Northampton Nene winter league was today fished on the Grand Union between Bugbrooke road Bridge and the piggeries at Gayton. wITH 75 anglers taking part.In extremely cold but bright conditions the match got off to a difficult start with three quarters of the anglers having to deal with quite thick ice stretching across the water for the first hour and a half. It was only when the sun got higher that the ice began to melt allowing the lads to fish properly. Though the ice was noticed during the pegging of the match at seven in the morning it had thickened quite considerably by match start at ten.

TEAMS SUNDAY 28TH JANUARY 2007
The Nosebags Angling Club today fished a match between Birds
Haulage and the Bugbrooke Road Bridge on the Grand Union Canal. The match which
was fished in dull windy conditions and was a little below par for the water
with only three anglers of the nine doing any good. Over all a very hard match
on the day.
Wellingborough based Aquaflow AC had a good turn out of 13
anglers for their match fished at Bugbrooke on the GUC with good weights
coming through out the match length. With North Westerly blustery winds
hampering the lads they did well to keep the fish feeding. At the end of the day
some respectable weights were recorded with both first and second places coming
from opposite ends of the match. Mick Large had the fish of the day with a perch
of 1lb 14ozs falling to pole fished maggot.
Northampton Nene chose to fish a match at Blisworth today and
despite the cold winds the lads didn't fare to badly in a match which saw mostly
roach being caught through out. The weights which were described as reasonable
for the time of year. SUNDAY 21ST JANUARY 2007
The Spencer Ac today fished a match on the GUC at Gayton and the
water did not fish particularly well due mainly to a very cold night wind which
chilled the water down and subsequently affected the fishing all caught fish
though the weights were generally low. NNAC MATCH Was also held on the GUC at Bugbrooke wharf though the cold winds prevailed through out the match and the water was chilled down all of the competitors were able to get at least three pounds of fish in the net. The results of the match were reasonably good over all.
1ST JOHN BUCKLEY 5LBS 14OZS NNAC Sunday 14th January 2007 Due to the extremely bad weather conditions of late and the subsequent high water levels on the rivers the Club relocated their match from the Middle Nene to the canal and opted to fish the long pound at Stoke Bruene. The match fished surprisingly well considering that the water levels were far lower than usual. On a fine cool day the match which was dominated by roach and skimmer bream fished excellently producing some spectacular winter weights RESULTS
