THAT AS OF THE FIRST DECEMBER 2007 THAT WE HAVE TAKEN OUT A LEASE IN
RELATION TO SHELFEYS LAKE ON THE WEST HUSBURY PARK AT LADYS LANE. THE
LAKE IS THEREFORE OPEN TO ALL MEMBER AND DAY TICKET ANGLERS ALIKE.
DUE TO PROBLEMS EXPERIENCED BY THE
CLUB AND THE OWNER OF THE LAND AT TURVEY IN RELATION TO A PARTICULAR SET
OF STEPS. THE ACCESS FOR THE WATER HAS BEEN ALTERED.
TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE WATER THE NEW POINT OF ENTRY WILL BE VIA THE GATE
AT THE LAVENDON END OF THE PARKING AREA.
WE ARE AWARE THAT THERE IS CURRENTLY
NOT A STILE IN POSITION AT THE END OF THE TOP FIELD WHERE THE WOODED
AREA IS, BUT THIS WILL BE RECTIFIED PRIOR TO THE START OF THE NEW
SEASON.
A SAD DAY FOR ANGLING

CHARLIE GREY
28TH August 1912 - Friday 8th June 2007
After a life time in the
sport of angling.
last week angling saw the sad loss of Charlie Grey. Who was Charlie Grey
well Charlie was a person to have on side in those post war days when
rods and angling equipment were scarce many an angler would bang old
Charlies front door off its hinges. Begging him to repair their rod or
model them a new one if indeed the old was past saving. If you needed
anything relating to angling back then Charlie was the man you would
approach. He became a rod builder of repute in his early years and
throughout his life angling was never far from Charlies heart.
He was a first class match
angler and indeed he won the County Championships in the 60's. Fishing
against 150 of the counties top rods he took the cup by 1 dram.
He was a member and
subsequently became a life member of the Northampton Nene Angling Club
and served on their committee for sometime he remained a member for some
80 years. But locally Charlie will best be remembered for being the
founder member of the Britannia angling club and the Stirling work he
did for them.
An angler of the old school
who will be missed by anglers across the board.
HELP
It is with some sadness that we find
ourselves once more in an impossible position. We have during the Closed
season had numerous occurrences which unfortunately relate to the
possible theft of fish from several waters. The River Nene at
Kingsthorpe and at The Bedford Road Sluice and Weston Mill Sluice has
been targeted persistently as has the Grand Union between the M1 15a
junction and the Banbury Lane. Members are asked to be extra vigilant
and to report any incidents witnessed to the EA whilst they are
happening please remember that the agency cannot act in hind sight they
need to catch the perpetrators of these crimes in the act.
Please be aware it is you as a
member of the Club that these people are stealing from please help us to
help you. REPORT EVERYTHING TO THE EA. THE MORE WE HASSLE THEM
THE MORE LIKELY THEY ARE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
SWAN VALLEY
On the nineteenth of November 2006 a
small film of diesel was noted entering the lake from the Wooton Brook
at the M1 end of the lake. There were several calls reporting the
incident and all were advised to call the EA hot line. Over the ensuing
weeks the small trace of Diesel oil became somewhat more evident
until just before Christmas when the EA finally sourced the leak to a
fuel line belonging to a local warehouse. The leak as a lot of members
became aware was soon covering the whole of the lake surface and due to
heavy rain also over the banks of the lake. Making it unpleasant to walk
around the property as the fumes were coming from the soil. To the point
that your clothing and vehicle smelled of diesel. On the twenty second
of December the EA notified us of that they had found where the diesel
was coming from and that the leak had been repaired. As a result of the
leak about three thousand small fish from one inch to about three were
removed from a swim on the lake and disposed of at the recycling centre.
The EA assure us that the amount of diesel on the lake was not felt to
be very serious and was treated as a diesel spill rather than a
fish kill since they were not aware of any fish mortality until after
the event. Would members please note that a diesel spill may put on the
back burner and not be classified as serious. Where as one fish death
would mean a guaranteed investigation. Please notify the EA of any and
all fish deaths.
PLEASE TAKE NOTE
Members are reminded that the Access
to the canal at Yardley Wharf is across private property.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO VEHICULAR ACCESS. Along the road
leading to the canal bridge. Also please note that other users of the
access must not be obstructed and that the stipulations laid down by
Northants Constabulary with regard to verge parking are that you must
park at least one metre inside the verge and do not obstruct the view
from the road junction. Failure to comply may mean your vehicle being
removed / clamped. There is no fishing what so ever into the Marina
entrance.

ANGLING CLUB

Dear Member,
You are reminded that the rules put in place by the Club are there not
only for your benefit but also in order that the fish stocks are
protected. With this in mind we feel that due to persistent rule
infringements by a minority of anglers which are once more becoming
evident on the fishery a reminder of the rule structure is necessary.
Please be aware of the following.
1)
Only one rod per angler to be set up at any
time, except under match conditions.
2)
Barbless hooks only to be used.
3)
Do not use either boilies or pop ups at
all.
4)
No nuts or beans to be used in any form.
5)
No fires or barbeques.
6)
No bivvies or tents.
7)
No night fishing.
8) It is a legal requirement of the Environment Agency
that you should never be more than three meters (ten feet) from any rod
which is in use.
NEVER LEAVE A ROD UNATTENDED. IF NATURE CALLS
OR YOU NEED TO RETURN TO YOUR CAR ETC. BRING YOUR ROD IN. NO EXCUSES
WILL BE ACCEPTED YOU WILL BE TOLD TO LEAVE.
USE THE BINS PROVIDED NOT THE BUSHES.
You are reminded that the fish in all the Clubs waters are a valuable
commodity and as such should be treated with care and respect. We there
fore ask that all anglers handle their catch with care, thus causing as
little stress to the fish as possible.
Do not carry the fish up and down the bank.
when taking pictures hold the fish as low to the ground as possible over
a padded mat.
Place all carp over ten pounds in a sling when returning the fish to the
water AND make sure the fish is properly rested and able to swim away.
Any one not wishing to comply with the rule structure will have his /
her Membership card endorsed and in the event that the person is a day
ticket angler they will be required to leave the fishery immediately.

WANTON DESTRUCTION
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 9TH

Yet another of the nets used by
Eastern Europeans has been recovered from the well targeted club still
water Ransome Road. It would seem that despite the best efforts of
both Club officials and the actions of the EA. There is no slowing down
the actions of certain people. Thanks to Mr Adrian Hornby for alerting
us to the latest in what would appear to be an endless stream of
offences.
WEDNESDAY 12TH JULY

At 8:45 in the evening. We were
informed that dead lines had been placed in Club waters on the River
Nene opposite the Britannia straight. The informant Simon Aldridge
pointed us toward a particular point on the River where the lines
pictured above were recovered from the rushes. All of the lines were
baited and thrown across the river when recovered. A person of Eastern
European persuasion had been seen to set the lines. The EA were called
and Chris Randell Fisheries officer from Kettering attended.
--------------------------------------------

Having received some information
on the evening of Saturday 17th June I went to a certain part of the
clubs still water Ransome Road just after dark and recovered the
apparatus pictured above and below. It had been left in the side
of the lake and was originally in the possession of a group of Eastern
Europeans. If you are suitably disgusted then please lobby your local MP
to try and get the current legislation altered so that we can protect
our stocks from those callous enough to do this sort of thing. At the
end of the day they are depriving you of your sport. Please help in
trying to cut this out if you see anything. Get the EA out
remember they can only act if the person
or persons are caught in the act Though you may want to hurt them please
don't. Call the EA HOTLINE.
We were recalled to the water at
05.30 the following morning having had a report from a person going to
work that there were once more a lot of bream and tench along the banks
of the lake. Returning to the water the only thing we found was an
extremely wet area and a warm fire pit. The fish were gone as were
the perpetrators.

NEVER TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER
PLEASE NOTE
Since surrendering the lease for
the Barrage Lake we have been asked to make public the fact that the
lake is now an SSSI and is currently unavailable for angling to any one
either during the day or over night. The owner of the sporting rights is
currently in negotiation with English Nature and at this moment does not
for see angling taking place during the next year at least.

A personal best as well as the first
fish of the year for Roy Ratcliffe.
The fish was caught close in on a ledger in absolutely awful conditions.
Having not had anything at the bottom end of the lake Roy moved and was
rewarded with the immaculate fish above.

There would appear to be a
substantial problem on some club waters with some apparent ethnic
minority groups who insist on stealing fish. The above net was recovered
this morning Sunday 26th February 2006. Unfortunately the users were not
apprehended.
If you see anything out of the
ordinary please call Richard on 01604 762542 and we will do our
best to respond as quickly as possible. Remember as Club members they
are stealing your fishing.

Steve Ringer was invited to do a
feature on the club controlled Dodford section of the G.U.C. at the end
of 2005 and quite a day he had to Steve took a good bag of quality perch
from a peg situated between Dodford and Weedon. We hope Steve will
continue to promote the clubs waters and look forward to further
reports.

A FIRST FOR PAT

Pat Clancy new to angling was
extremely happy with his first ever pike caught at the Meadow Lakes
Fishery. When all else failed Pat fished a lob intended for carp to
catch the
pike.
OLD BOYS OUTING
October 20th 2005

The old boys of the Nene AC were
today fishing on the Brickyard pond at Castle Ashby and despite a slow
windy start the fishing was'nt to bad most of the 21 anglers caught fish
with Bream being the dominant species coming more rapidly as the day
warmed up. Ray Gregory took the honours with a cracking bag of mostly
bream.

RESULTS
1ST RAY GREGORY 29LBS 14OZS
2ND GERALD GREEN 19LBS
3RD JACK BRADSHAW 12LBS 8OZS
4TH GLEN TILSON 8LBS 4OZS

MONDAY 1ST AUGUST 2005
PLEASE BE
AWARE
In the event that if you are
fishing the Delapre Park Lake. (Ransome Road) It is a public park
and as such people exercise their animals around the lake. Some times
these animals are not on a leash and may stray into the area you are
fishing and being curious they will investigate anything which you may
have accidentally left laying around on the ground. Please be
particularly careful where baited hooks are left as an animal has no
sense of danger when picking up what may appear to it to be a discarded
bait, and therefore a free meal.
There is absolutely no vehicular
access to any point on the lake apart from the allocated car parks.
DO NOT
DRIVE AROUND THE LAKE WHAT EVER THE REASON. ANY ONE FOUND TO BE IN
BREACH OF THIS WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE IMMEDIATLY.
WEDNESDAY 13TH JULY 2005

The annual netting of the Turvey
stretch of the River Great Ouse. The water produced a lot of quality
fish during the survey with plenty of barbel showing along with some
prime chub there were also a lot of good dace and plenty of smaller fish
all in all a successful day all round.

FRIDAY 1ST JULY 2005

Long time members of the club
Husband and wife Tony and Carol Smith spent the night on the River above
the Canoe Slalom in Northampton with cracking results. There could well
have been more but for the fact that they ran out of ground bait. Tony
fished till about midnight and the started again at about seven this
morning. The mixed bag of fish was well clear of forty pounds. The best
river bag so far this season.
10TH MAY

The Landlords of Swan Valley have
improved the access by removing part of the fencing and the bund at the
second gate so that the disabled and elderly anglers have an easier
access and no longer have to struggle over the gates with their tackle.
5TH MAY

The new water is still producing
the goods with some substantial bags being caught. A good head of
quality tench and bream are showing as well as good catches of decent
roach.
20TH APRIL 2005
RED LETTER DAY ON NEW WATER

The latest addition to the Club
card is as most will by now know the Swan Valley Lake. A new water
recently secured after three years of negotiation. For Peter Dixon it
was a day worth remembering. As his membership was being checked his rod
screamed off and after a brief battle he landed the first of a fine pair
of carp. A spotless Mirror which weighed in at 15lbs 12ozs. Having spent
another hour watching fish move Peter then took his second fish of the
day a common which tipped the scales at 17lbs. A brilliant start to the
year for one angler who will certainly be making a return visit.

As well as the carp beginning to
show tench, roach, rudd and gudgeon were also showing reasonably well.
The water is finally starting to fish with the arrival of some decent
temperatures.

Thursday 1st July
The Environment Agency today carried out a fish survey on the Great Ouse
at Turvey. The suvey which was carried out between 10.30am and 3.30pm
was not as successful as the EA had anticipated though there were a
substantial amount of fish of all species taken. On top of the survey
there were close to another 30 fish observed feeding by club members in
attendance.

READY FOR USE.

A week after the above report,
the stages are being finished and are ready for use. The earth filled
structures created by Dominic Cawley and his team are built to the
required standard of the Environment agency and the two pegs closest to
the Rushmere Road Bridge have gentle slopes leading to them which have
been covered with compacted Granite chippings thus allowing for a smooth
access for wheel chair access and

the disabled angler as well as the able bodied member. The E.A. will
also endeavour to improve the flow on the lake as well as under take
some weed clearance. On top of all this the E.A. are also looking to
improve the water along side the Rugby Ground on the Rushmere road. Thus
improving the oxygenation and the flow of the water as well as hopefully
improving the habitat for the fish. The club are extremely grateful to
the Environment Agency for their support and assistance with the
project.

20TH NOVEMBER 2003
The Northampton Nene Senior
citizens Fur and feather was today fished on the Grand Union Canal at
Weedon. The weather was reasonable for the time of year though rain
threatened through the latter part of the match. The fifteen men on the
match caught well at the start of the match but several people found
they could not get a bite towards the end. All anglers caught fish and
on the day that's all that counts. A good day had by all .
THE WEIGHTS WERE:
1ST JACK BRADSHAW 4LBS 4OZS
2ND GLEN TILSON 3LBS 7OZS
3RD MAURICE SAUNDERS 3LBS 2OZS
SECTION WINS WENT TO RAY GREGORY, RON COLLINS AND ALF RATCLIFFE.
THE LADIES WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS.

On the 23rd and 24th of August 2003 the England
ladies team once more made us proud to be British.
They came home 1st after a close fought two day match fished at the
Fursden lake in Milton Keynes. The match which was fished over two days
saw England, France and Italy fighting hard for the top honours. After
two days of angling which saw 15 international teams of five take part
the match ended the way it had begun with the sun shining a gentle
breeze across the water and the fishing was consistent through out. All
the ladies caught fish over the two days with no blanks recorded. The
majority of the girls were catching roach or small skimmers with a few
bonus tench and larger bream coming to one or two of the anglers. The
French girls were 2nd.

The 2003 Summer get together.
17th July 2003
The pensioners get together was today
held on the Meadow Lakes complex at Rothersthorpe. Though the title
reads the 'SUMMER' it was far from that in fact it was cold, it poured
with rain, and the wind blew continually. However not one of the
nineteen anglers gave up. They endured the conditions admirably and
despite the fishing being extremely hard they fought on. Thank you to
the Nene Angling Club for raising some of the winnings at the AGM raffle
and for supplying the water.
The results of the day were:
1ST GEORGE RICHMOND 5LBS 6OZS ( TWO TENCH)
2ND ALF RATCLIFFE 3LBS 5OZS. (TENCH AND BITS)
3RD MR WELDON 3LBS (SILVER FISH)
4TH HARRY CLARKE 2LBS 8OZS (ONE TENCH)
5TH RON COLLINS 2LBS 1OZ (BITS)

The weed at Meadow lakes was
successfully treated on the 1st of July by Dr Bruno Broughton. The large
lake and the small lake are both showing signs of improvement. There
are good catches coming from the lakes and where previously you could
only fish at two to three feet there is now hardly any weed left
allowing those of us who wish to fish deep to do so. There have been
some substantial catches recently with both the Rudd and Roach showing
well. The Tench are also showing more frequently than they were last
year with several confirmed fish of over four pounds. The carp have also
been caught with reasonable regularity with the biggest confirmed Club
fish being 24 and a half pounds closely followed by a Common of 23. We
are still looking for entries for the specimen fish cup and if you know
of any good Junior catches please call Richard or Michael
Useful
Contacts who will do their best to get to you and do a
photo and a report. We are looking for junior reports so that we can
start up a new page on the web the more entries the better. Please help
us to create a site you will enjoy cheers.
Richard.

The Canal Partnership, British
Waterways and Northampton Nene Anglers got together on Saturday
the 5th of May to introduce youngsters to angling and the fish of the
canal system. There were twelve youngsters of varying ages all of whom
had a good day and caught fish of different species the event took
place between one and four in the afternoon and the result is that all
parties are keen to get another day arranged. For further details
contact Jacqui Palmer on 01604 858709.

The first twenty nine of the year was
taken on Wednesday the 16th of April on floating dog biscuit the fish
which was in prime condition was taken from the popular local still
water Meadow Lakes.
A return to fishing after a nine year break was also celebrated in style
by a local angler with a lovely Tench of four four.

Local water keeper John Barford
succeeded in attracting a fine end of season Barbel from the Great Ouse.
After a good deal of work John managed to lure his fish from the river
in the waning days of the River season. A nice fish at 13lb 3ozs.
Local angler Ron Kyte fished Meadow
lakes on two occasions recently for a couple of short evening sessions
and found his bread flake baits taken by some pretty substantial Bream
though his light tackle was taken apart by one of the larger resident
carp in the big lake. His Bream went five three and five one a couple
of nice fish in a limited time span.
The Great Ouse
2nd March 2003
Water keeper John Barford has recently
taken two cracking Chub from the clubs Ouse waters the 6lb 1oz and 6lb
8oz specimen fish both fell to John after a great deal of hard work.
Despite his busy bailiffing schedule John did manage to get some fishing
in and it certainly paid off.
The river season is almost at an end now so make the most of the last
few days. If you do happen to contact a decent catch please let us Know.
Don’t forget the specimen cup is up for grabs.
Any news you have, we can use on the web
site so get those fingers dialling.
Michael on 01604 714080 or Richard 01604 762542.
The Great Ouse
FEBRUARY 23RD 2003
The fishing was not very good at Newton
Blossomville on the river Great Ouse today there were no fish showing
for those that made the journey from Northampton. There were
two anglers at Turvey who looked as if they may be there for a while
who had taken fish. None of the illusive Barbel had been caught but
both of the anglers had taken chub. One had taken two chub of about a
pound each, the other had taken chub to 5lbs.
Meadow Lakes
Both the large and small lakes have
been under ice for most of the last week which has meant that it has
been unfishable. There is currently no access to vehicles at the moment
since the field is sodden and needs to firm up a bit before the farmer
will once more allow cars access.
The Grand Union Canal
The canal despite the boat traffic is
fishing reasonably well in most areas, with reasonable bags of both
Roach and Perch showing through out the water. There has been a certain
amount of ice on the water lately though the fishing should gradually
improve with the arrival of some warmer weather.
THE RIVER GREAT OUSE
(TURVEY)

FEBRUARY 8TH 2003
Whilst walking around some of the clubs
waters in the line of checking anglers permits, the Assistant Head
Bailiff and I took the opportunity to take some photos of the Turvey
stretch of the Great Ouse and chat to one or two of the Anglers we met.
Despite the absolutely great conditions there were only four anglers on
the water. They were having various measures of success. The river was
high but the colour was perfect as we were told by those fortunate
enough to be enjoying a days fishing.
Paul Oliver (a junior) from Turvey was
able to tell us of the very impressive catches he had had from the water
during this season which included a Chub which went to 7LB 2oz and a
string of smaller fish which had taken his baits but his crowning glory
was a Barbel of 14LB all of Paul's fish were taken on the same bait.
Paul Hughes was the next angler
we spoke to, he was fishing just above the top field at Turvey and the
success Paul shared with us happened today. He dropped into one of the
Island swims and was rewarded on his first cast by a Barbel of 12LB 8oz.
Having landed the fish Paul went a wandering and settled in the swim
where we found him. He had taken a Chub of 3LB from this swim too and to
use Paul's words the Chub seem to be going nuts for some reason today.
Indeed in the short time that we were with both of these anglers their
rods were either dropping back or nodding away as the fish sampled their
baits we were hoping for the illusive Barbel to show themselves but they
knew we had a camera. May be next time.

LOCAL RIVER DEWATERED.
26TH JANUARY 2003
The River Nene in Northampton was as local people are
aware almost completely dewatered. As a result of the Bedford Road
Sluice gate becoming stuck in the open position, after being opened as a
precautionary measure following heavy rainfall. Due to mechanical
failure the Sluice gates remained open for the following week thus
allowing the River to drain almost entirely damaging local fisheries
controlled by the club. Most of the fish vanished along with the water
but those left behind were snapped up by the gulls and cormorants which
had a field day at the expense of local Angling Clubs.
Mr Darryl Moreby with his Canal catch.

Darryl of Hardingstone Northampton had a quiet mornings
angling on the G.U.C. at Grafton Regis near Northampton though the
conditions made it hard work the smile on Darryl's face says it all.
There were several matches held along the canal today details of these
can be found on

MEADOW LAKES
13TH JANUARY 2003
We have purchased a batch of small
Bream for starters from Framlingham Fisheries. They were delivered on
the 13th January and put in to the larger of the two lakes as can be
seen from the photo's above in the second photo 'Max' from Framlingham
can be seen at the lake side in the process of delivering some of the
fish to their new home. The other thing that people want is to see less
weed in the lake. We are endeavouring to do something about that too in
the next couple of months We are getting Dr Bruno Broughton to come in
and treat the water to help control the spread of the Canadian Pond
Weed. Thus we hope improving the angling.
